Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun

November 28, 2007 / by beastly

Did you notice I was a Pink Floyd fan? So don't take me too seriously, if there was any threat of that. More of a Waters fan actually. 'Amused to Death' rather put 'Division Bell' to shame but that's alright. Gilmour can still bend that string to perfection. Of course Beck is something else entirely, but enough Rock aesthetics. Heard 'Leaving Beirut'? I think I'll leave it for you to research but I heartily recommend it. As I recommend Chomsky's 'Power and Terror' but won't link it. No spoon-feeding today. I'll list the Sharpton/Hitchens debate, 'I Remember Lemuria' and Marcion of Sinope but it's up to you what interests. If anything.

But I will give you the pertinence (impertinently, god I love English). 'Amused to Death' was visionary. You haven't heard Marv Alpert give the play by play on the battle for an oil rig? Years ahead of time, how the hell did he know? Is the crock so predictable? 'Beirut' is years after the fact. Still, powerful stuff.

Chomsky is heavy. I'm still waiting to hear that criticism K, come on! It doesn't matter what you believe, he will tell you something you didn't know.

I do not like Christopher Hitchens. I doubt very much that he has many friends. I doubt he would want them. And it is possible to tear apart much of his work with logic and facts. All the same it is difficult to stave off his criticism. Sharpton doesn't represent Christianity very well in the face of it. Of course it takes someone with less Faith to support it powerfully in my humble opinion; you can only buttress its successes if you are capable of admitting its failures. Hence McGrath's relative success, once again, in my opinion.

That Scientology is derivative and destructive is not opinion. Read Poe, read Freud, a little Lovecraft a little Jung and my goodness a LOT of Shaver. I love learning, I just discovered Shaver. I don't worry so much if other information falls off, hopefully the good stuff bubbles up. Until the gray-matter's defunct. If you think we should tolerate Scientology please explain Lisa McPherson. Think you could have a good time in Clearwater? Well, the Mormons have stopped shooting people. Scientology could grow up too. But the Mormons inherit some experience from mainstream Christianity. They may not demonstrate the 1400 year horrors I whined about in 'Kalam Fadi'. Moroni and Xenu may be from the same planet, but I can talk to Mormons. Even if their book has the same SciFi flavor they seem to have senses of humor. And they choose some of the good stuff Jesus said. The Church of Hubbard is most valuable for how it delineates every horrible thing a religion can be, from 'Fair Game' to the fees. Would a Church of Lemuria be as heartless?

From Moroni to Marcion, I do hope I edify. Why did Christianity keep that crap? Wasn't Jesus saying we could do better? I don't think he'd be very happy with the Church that claims to be in his name. Let's get down to it. Yes, it's about to time to go to bed so let's empty the chambers: the idea that Jesus was the Christ (nor that anyone could ever be) is not supportable. In fact the idea that he said he was has little hard evidence. We have hard evidence from Plato, don't try to weasel out on the age tip. Yeshua the teacher existed, that's pretty clear. That there was anything supernatural about him, not so much. It's unfortunate we have to bury good ideas in mystical narcissistic archetypes. But then what do I know? I first learned the story from Superstar. Right about the same time I discovered the Floyd.

This is one of the most intense way I've ever really heard anybody take politics and make it into basically a rock opera.
But do read down at the bottom for the classic Merv Alpert ('pre' his public little mishap) narrating a war.

The monkey sat on a pile of stones
And he stared at the broken bone in his hand
    And the strains Viennese quartet
    Rang out across the land

The monkey looked up at the stars
    And thought to himself
    Memory is a stranger
    History is for fools

    And he cleaned his hands
In a pool of holy writing
Turned his back on the garden
And set out for the nearest town

    Hold on hold on soldier
When you add it all up
    The tears and the marrowbone
There s an ounce of gold

And an ounce of pride in each ledger
And the Germans killed the Jews
And the Jews killed the Arabs
And the Arabs killed the hostages
    And that is the news

    And is it any wonder
    That the monkey s confused
    He said Mama Mama

    "The President s a fool
Why do I have to keep reading
    These technical manuals?"

And the joint chiefs of staff
And the brokers on Wall Street said
    Don t make us laugh
    You re a smart kid

    Time is linear
    Memory is a stranger
    History is for fools
Man is a tool in the hands
    Of the great God Almighty

    And they gave him command
    Of a nuclear submarine
And sent him back in search of
    The Garden of Eden~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
###########not in song look down for merv alpert quote########
That last part of the 1st part of (epic) song is really soooo sad to me (first a) just the thought
b)sending nukes into eden &c) the womans voice singing the last phrase is so beautiful). Aso it's unfortunately what many humans have become, I feel there a small percentage of humans on this planet actually feel as though they are the monkey.################################################

"Hi everybody I m Marv Albert
    And welcome to our telecast
Coming to you live from Memorial Stadium
    It s a beautiful day
And today we expect a sensational matchup
    But first our global anthem."
    Can't you see
    It all makes perfect sense
    Expressed in dollars and cents
    Pounds shillings and pence
    "And here come the players
As I speak to you now the captain
Has his cross hairs zeroed in on the oil rig....
It looks to me like he s going to attack
By the way did you know that a submarine Captain earns 200,000 dollars a year?"
    "Oh that's less tax Marv."
"Yeah less tax, Uh thank you Emery."
    "You're welcome."
"Now back to the game, he fires one, yes!
There goes two! Both fish are running
The rig is going into a prevent defense
Will they make it? I don't think so....."

    [OHMY]
